Our Science Experiment

For the science fair, our first grade class did an experiment on chocolate. We wanted to figure out which brand of chocolate (Hershey's or Cadbury) melts the fastest. Since there was no sun outside on our scheduled experiment day, we decided to test the melting with our body heat. We entitled our experiment "Messy Chocolate Hands". Despite our class prediction that Hershey's will melt faster, we learned that they both melt at the same exact rate! We had a lot of fun in science this week! (What could possibly be more fun than being covered in chocolate?) :)
The school is open tonight from 6:30 - 7:30 for families to come and view all of the science fair projects. Kindergarten, First, and Second grade class projects are being displayed in the media center. Third and Fourth grade group projects as well as Fifth grade individual and partner projects are being displayed in the multi-purpose room.
Have a great day! :)

Thanks for the extra tissues and hand sanitizer!

We really appreciate the extra tissues and hand sanitizer...we go through it so fast!

Since we have been talking about Johnny Appleseed this week, we decided to make applesauce together today. Each student had a chance to help out, it was a lot of fun (and delicious)!

Thanks for our beautiful handmade cards!

Thanks for all of our beautiful "teacher appreciation" cards this morning. You all made us feel very special!

This morning our patrol students led us in a school-wide flag raising ceremony in the amphitheater. We then had a chance to listen to a few songs from our Jaguar Chorus and Orff Ensemble. We were also in for a treat when the Spanish/English kindergarten class danced for us and our principal Ms. Kornblum went up on stage to join them!! :)

Have a great day!

Sights and Sounds Tonight, May 5th

Tonight is our schools annual Sights and Sounds of Beauclerc night. The school will be open at 6:30 for families to walk through and admire all the student art work that is hanging from the walls and displayed in the multi-purpose room. Each one of our first grade students has a piece of art hanging in the first grade and kindergarten building.
At 7:00 a special concert will begin outside in the amphitheater. Come hear members of our Jaguar Chorus, our Jaguar Jam Orff Ensemble, and our kindergartners from the Dual Language Spanish/English Program.

Thanks everyone for our beautiful baskets filled with fruit and chocolate! That was so thoughtful, we love them! You have all made us feel very appreciated this week! :)

Persuasive Writing

Since we have been talking about persuasive writing, our class decided to write a persuasive letter to Mrs. Beverly in the front office of our school. We were trying to persuade her to let us babysit her pet beta fish named Fishy for one day. After much brainstorming, this is the letter that our class came up with. We brought it up to the front office and read it to her, and we must have written a great piece, because she said yes! Here is a picture of our persuasive letter, and a picture of Fishy. Fishy is spending the day in our room today! Way to go first grade writers!!! :)

Thanks for our nice Flowers and Poster!

What a nice surprise today with all of the beautiful flowers and cool monkey poster! Thanks everyone! We planted Melisa, Luka, and Victors flowers in the garden outside our classroom.

Spelling Words May 1 - May 8

This weeks spelling words are high frequency and r-controlled "or" words.

1. before
2. cold
3. full
4. off
5. would
6. born
7. fork
8. short
9. torn
10. storm

We have just started teaching persuasive writing. This kind of writing tries to convince the reader to do what the writer proposes or to adopt the writers point of view. You can have your child practice this at home verbally by giving valid reasons for their point of view. (for example: why I think pizza is the best food, or why I think you should read this book etc...)

Have a great week! :)
