Pajama Day

We all looked so cute in our pajamas today! Mrs. Ledford and Mrs. Vaillette had matching monkey pajamas on, (of course), and even a few students had monkey pajamas too! We had a fun day! Don't forget to read every single day over the school break and fill out your book log daily! Have a great holiday! See you back at school on Monday January 4th!

It Snowed At School Today!

We had a snow-making machine outside our classroom today and we all got to walk through the snow! It was fun!

Thanks Parent Volunteers!

Thanks to all the parents that were able to stop by and help out with our craft centers. Dillyn's grandma, Isaac's mom, Matthew's mom, Justin's mom, Sofia's mom, even Mrs. Ledford's mom!! We really appreciate your help! Thanks also to everyone who donated little "trinkets" for our holiday gift bags! We love our parents!! :)

Holiday Party

We had a great time at our Holiday Party on friday! We split up into groups and made a bunch of different crafts. We made a holiday bookmark, a snowflake magnet, a snowman ornament, a photo penguin, and a bag to put them all in. Here are some pictures of our fun-filled afternoon!

Author Study

We have started a new "author study" on one of our favorite authors, Robert Munsch. We will be reading many of his books over the next couple weeks (he has published over 40 of them). He writes a lot of funny books that children can make connections to. It would be a great idea to check out some of his books next time you are at the public library! If you want to learn more about him...check out his website at:

www.robertmunsch.com

Some of the Robert Munsch books we will be reading in class are:

~ Aaron's Hair
~ I'm so Embarrassed
~ Get out of Bed
~ More Pies
~ Alligator Baby
~ The Paper Bag Princess
~ Ribbon Rescue
~ Mmm, Cookies
~ Look at Me
~ Andrew's Loose Tooth
~ Jonathan Cleaned Up - Then He Heard a Sound
~ Thomas' Snowsuit

(But he has MANY more great books!!!!)

Door Decorating Contest

Our school is having a classroom door decorating contest for the holiday season. Of COURSE we had to somehow use a monkey...

Our class thinks that we will win 1st place! :)

Geometry

We are enjoying our geometry work in math investigations. Our work this week is focusing on composing and decomposing shapes and altering designs to use more of fewer pieces to cover the same space. We are using shapes such as: a square, hexagon, trapezoid, rhombus, and triangle. Here are some pictures of us at work today. We were filling the same shape in 3 different ways.

Making Coasters

Today we made turkey coasters to get us ready for thanksgiving. We are going to make a placemat on Monday, and then on Tuesday, if we are well behaved, we are going to eat our lunches in the classroom on our very own homemade placemats and put our drinks on our coasters. Sounds like fun! Here we are at work!

Weekly Homework

Since we will only be coming to school for 2 days next week, we will not be sending home the usual weekly homework. Instead, we will be sending home a book log for each day your child is home over the Thanksgiving break. It is so important that your child reads at home every single day, ESPECIALLY days that they are not in school. We told the students that we will give them a treat if they read every day over break and fill out each day on their book log.
Have a great holiday!
We are "thankful" for our wonderful class and our supportive parents from home! Thanks! :)

Geometry

We have started our new math investigations unit this week called "Quilt Squares and Block Towns". This unit deals with studying 2-D and 3-D geometry. Geometry at the first grade level involves studying shapes and the way they are are related. So far this week we have learned the names and shapes of: a square, hexagon, trapezoid, rhombus, and triangle.
Over the past couple days, we have been taking these shapes and using them to fill in an outline. Here are some pictures of us a work. See all of the different combinations of shapes we came up with to fill our outlines today!

Making Applesauce

Here are some more pictures of us writing our functional stories (How to Make Applesauce) and some pictures of us enjoying our treat at the end of the day! :)

Functional Writing

Today in functional writing we wrote our pieces on 'How to Make Applesauce'. The reason we were all able to write this, is because we all learned how to make applesauce together this morning. We all got to take a turn helping with something. Some of us used the "apple peeler/corer/slicer", some of us added tablespoons of sugar, Tristen added the water, and Isaac sprinkled on our cinnamon. It cooked all day in the back of the classroom in a slow-cooker, then after recess, we were all able to try it. Yummy! Here are some pictures of us at work today.
