Twin Day
The kids really enjoyed Mrs. Ledford and Mrs. Vaillettes matching outfits on twin day! All the girls were twins wearing pink, and all the boys were twins wearing blue. It was a great end to our spirit week. Have a wonderful spring break everyone and don't forget to read EVERY SINGLE DAY! :)

Cultural Arts Day
Our last activity of the day was going to see an artist, who taught us all how to draw a bunny. We had a great day!
Inside-Out and Backwards Day
Our day started off by a visit from our mascot JJ the Jaguar who got in the hot air balloon with our principal Mrs. Kornblum. Then we went to watch a juggling show, a story teller, and the navy band. We had fun wearing our clother inside out/backwards. :)

St. Patrick's Day
We were all on our best behavior today because if you were "caught" making a good choice, then you were sent to the "pot of gold" to get a chocolate gold coin. We also had fun sorting Lucky Charms cereal in math investigations today. We added different groups of cereal shapes and talked about "least" and "greatest" numbers. Great job today everyone!
Pictures from our field trip to the JCA
We had a great time...thanks again to the parents who came with us!! We were so lucky that Xavier, Karthika and Victor were all picked out of the audience to go on stage! That was really neat!

Next Monday (March 24th) will be our "play day" at school. This is when Coach Scott (our P.E. teacher) puts together a bunch of relay races and games and all of the first grade classes will be competing against each other. It lasts about an hour. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed for the occasion (preferably no dresses or skirts...and make sure your child has sneakers or tennis shoes on).

Spelling Words March 6 - 13
This weeks spelling words are high frequency and long 'a' words. We have talked about many vowel blends (like last weeks 'ea') and this weeks vowel blend is 'ai'. Students have learned that most of the time when you see a vowel blend, the first vowel says its name (makes the long vowel sound).
1. don't
2. from
3. hear
4. live
5. when
6. rain
7. wait
8. pail
9. snail
10. nail
We have just started a new unit in our math investigations program called Number Games and Story Problems. This unit deals with number combinations, counting objects that come in 2's like feet, and in 4's, 5's, and 10's. The students will be practicing reading, writing and sequencing numbers up to 100 as well as playing number games and solving many story problems. Story problems are a great thing to practice with your child, even if you are just driving in the car together. You can verbally ask them a problem like "I was carrying 12 apples in my bag. Five of them fell out, how many apples are left in my bag?" (12-5=7) Or "There were four students on the playground. Two boys joined them to play, then three more girls joined them as well. How many students were playing on the playground now?" (4+2+3=9)
Don't forget that we have a field trip this coming Wednesday the 11th. We are going to the JCA to see some plays entitled: The Stories of Dr. Seuss. Don't forget to send your child to school with a bagged lunch. We are looking forward to a fun filled day!

This week we are continuing to work on functional writing. This genre of writing gives directions and explains how to make or do something. To support your child in this at home, go through the steps of how to do something they are familiar with. (for example: how to ride a skateboard, or how to tie my shoelaces) Make sure they are able to use details and explain the steps in the right order.
