Report Writing
This week, we will be sending home some of the students persuasive writing pieces that we have finished because we are kicking off a new genre of writing called "Report Writing".
In report writing, students will be learning how to gather information (we use a lot of non-fiction childrens books) then sort it into categories on a graphic organizer. We then take our sorted information and put it into a report with chapter headings and pictures or diagrams.
The pictures above show our checklist and rubric. After teaching all mini lessons on report writing, we expect the students to be able to write a report that includes all of the elements above. We also expect them to be able to circle a '3' on the rubric, which means their report meets the first grade standard.
Students always love this kind of writing, because they are learning fun facts about some of their favorite animals while learning how to write a report at the same time.
This would be a great time for you to go to the public library and check out some non-fiction childrens books on animals, plants, countries, or what ever seems to peak your childs interest. Read these books together and talk about the important points of information you have learned.
Have a great day!

Meet Our New Class Pet Alfalfa
Do you see a striking resemblance between our new guinea pig and the Alfalfa from "The Little Rascals"? :)
The students were so excited to meet our new class pet!
Persuasive Writing
During the last week of school before winter break, we all decided to write a persuasive piece on why we think we should have a class pet. Since Mrs. Ledford & Mrs. Vaillette's moms are always sending in treats to our class, we thought that we would write this letter to them, in hopes that if it was written well enough, they might get a class pet for us.
Well... IT WORKED!!
Our story was so persuasive, that Mrs. Ledford's mom went out over the winter break and bought our class a Ginea Pig!!
Here's the persuasive piece that we wrote together as a whole class. I guess we are better persuasive authors than we thought! :)
