The On and Off Game

We have been finding ways to break numbers apart and put them back together in math investigations. One of the games we have played this week is the On and Off game. In this game, your child starts out with a certain number of counters (such as 10) and they drop those counters on top of a piece of paper and see how many land on the paper and how many land off the paper. They record their findings to discover different ways to make their total number (such as 8 are on the paper and 2 are off...so 8+2=10). This is a game that you can play at home with your child. You can use any kind of counter (such as coins or buttons). We sent home a game sheet in the folder you received at Open House.

Reading Strategies

We are continuing to teach different reading strategies to help students figure out words they don't know. While your child is reading to you, instead of just telling them an unfamiliar word, encourage your child to figure it out, using the reading strategies they are learning at school. (such as: looking at the pictures for a clue, stretching out the sounds, asking what word would make sense there, etc...)
Thanks for reading with your child every day! It is so important for their success this year!

Making Words

You have probably noticed these paper letters going home this week! We will be playing the game "making words" a couple times a week this school year. We encourage you to take a couple minutes to sit down with your child and have them show you what words they made that day at school. If you put all of the letters together it makes one "secret word"...see if you can figure it out...we know your child would love to try and trick you! :)
